New Idea: Regional Domain Name Sublet
I just posted a new idea to Cambrian House... Regional Domain Name Sublet. It is a way for an owner of a domain name to "share" the domain, without giving up total control of it, potentially making some money off of it, and helping others around the world that might benefit from the domain name.
There are a lot of technical and legal issues with it, but that is why it is just an idea...

not too clear about the concept... isnt it what is called as "subdomain" ? so if you have texas.com (domain) and then have sevaral subdomains.. eg - biz.texas.com, handicraft.texas.com, etc

Sorry for being so vague on this, it was certainly one of my less-thought-out ideas. You bring up a great point about sub-domains, but I think a better sub-domain analogy would be this:
boston.joespizza.com
dallas.joespizza.com
chicago.joespizza.com
While sub-domains are much more acceptable today and the average user knows that going to specificshow.usanetwork.com will work and you don’t need www.usanetwork.com anymore, the fact is, sub-domains can be a bit clunky.
However, using sub-domains behind the scenes to provision the domain regionally may work. I’m not sure of the mechanics required here, whether this has to take place at the DNS level or if something could be built at the application layer, but the regional domain sublet idea is the same as having regional sub-domains, without actually showing the sub-domain or making someone type in the sub-domain to access the site.
So, as a pizza buyer in Dallas, if I want to see the menu or order online from my local Joe’s Pizza, I would not have to type in dallas.joespizza.com. In fact, there may not be a publicly available dallas.joespizza.com. I would simply type in joespizza.com and be routed, based on my location (derived from my publicly available IP just as Google does for localized ads), to the localized version of joespizza.com. If I was on a trip to Boston, I would get the Boston version of joespizza.com. This is great because the Dallas store and the Boston store are not related in anyway, but they both benefit from the simple joespizza.com.
I hope this clarifies the idea a bit.

I just realized my model for this is similar to Regional 800#s. I'm not sure if they still do this. This model made sense for those companies that wanted a vanity 800# (1-800-PIZZAJOE) for toll-free access for regional customers, but did not do business outside of that region. This Regional Domain Sublet idea is the same as that, but for the InterWeb.
